Department of Commerce

The Department of Commerce was established in June 1963 and has experienced remarkable growth since its inception. Starting with just a few hundred students, the department has expanded significantly over the years and has become one of the most dynamic and active departments within the institution. In June 1979, it was recognized as a Research Centre for the Ph.D. degree course by its affiliating university, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad. The department further expanded its academic offerings by introducing the Post Graduate course M.Com. on a self-finance basis in June 1982. Continuing its commitment to academic development, the department launched the Post Graduate Diploma in Tax Procedure and Practice (PGDTPP), also on a self-finance basis, in June 2019.
At present, the Department offers a total of four divisions for the B.Com. program, two divisions for M.Com., and one division for the PGDTPP course. The department is well-known for its vibrant academic environment and its focus on both theoretical and practical learning. To enhance the practical knowledge and confidence of students, a variety of activities are organized regularly. These include industrial visits, classroom seminars, the annual YM ZEP event, student presentation competitions, elocution and debate competitions, group discussions, guest lectures, and induction and farewell functions. Students are also encouraged to actively participate in intercollegiate competitions, workshops, and various competitive examinations.
Teaching, learning, and evaluation in the Department of Commerce go beyond conventional methods. Along with traditional classroom teaching, Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based teaching is integrated into regular instruction. Students are encouraged to use computers and internet services to support self-learning. Learning activities include tutorials, homework assignments, training, fieldwork, and project work, all aimed at fostering independent learning. Study tours and field visits further enrich their practical understanding. Student evaluation is conducted through internal class tests, online multiple-choice tests, group discussions, seminars, personal interviews, and assessments of practical work, project records, and tutorials. A pre-semester examination is also conducted, with the final evaluation carried out through university exams at the end of each semester.
Among the best practices followed by the department is the emphasis on experiential learning. Final-year undergraduate students are required to submit project work based on field training and real-world exposure. Postgraduate students are expected to complete research projects based on primary and secondary data collection. Educational visits to various firms, offices, and industries within the Nanded district are organized to provide students with practical insights into the corporate world. The department also offers several short-term and career-oriented courses such as financial accounting, Tally ERP 9, and a UGC-sponsored vocational course in Tax Procedure and Practice.
In the academic year 2024–25, the department enhanced its teaching infrastructure with the purchase of a Senses Smartboard under the PM-USHA (Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) Scheme, significantly boosting its digital teaching capabilities. As part of the soft-component of the PM-USHA scheme, the department is also running a value-added program in Accounting and Taxation to strengthen students' domain-specific skills. Additionally, in the academic year 2023–24, the department introduced two add-on courses and two value-added courses, aligning its curriculum with emerging academic and industry trends and ensuring holistic development of students.
The department is supported by a dedicated and qualified team of faculty members. It currently has 6 regular faculty members, 3 on fix-pay, and 8 CHB (Clock Hour Basis) faculty members, all of whom contribute actively to academic delivery, research, mentoring, and co-curricular activities. This strong academic workforce ensures that students receive focused attention and quality education across all levels of the program.
In terms of infrastructure, the Department of Commerce provides excellent facilities to support both students and faculty. It houses a well-stocked departmental library with textbooks, reference materials, and periodicals. A well-equipped computer laboratory with internet access and printing facilities is also available. Additionally, three ICT-enabled classrooms with LCD projectors, along with the newly installed smartboard, are used to facilitate modern, technology-driven teaching methods.
